So you want to extend the toolbar for your mediawiki editors? I know I do. Here is how I did it:
First copy and paste the code at http://www.appropedia.org/MediaWiki:Common.js

So we have been looking for a way to get Google mentions of Appropedia fed via RSS.

Looks like tags and filtered feed are working - very cool! Next, the wikilink bot and cross-login...
Testing wikitech tag...

Often it's really desirable to insert an image into your blog post or other content. You want the images inserted inline with the text, not just tagged at the end.
To do that here at the Appropedia forums,
maestro: My son (I just did this here), click on the "Add image" link text below the edit window for the content.
Hope that works, and let me know (click my photo, then contact me) if it doesn't!

So the upgrade of MediaWiki (MW) to 1.11 was successful, thanks to Gabe! I really should blog on the many improvements (such as tags working for image galleries - YES), but instead I am going to mention one of the breaks. Google Analytics (GA) stopped working. This means we now only have AWstats and MediaWiki data for this last week. The reason that it broke is that I placed the GA tracker in the MonoBook.php skin. The MW upgrade replaces that skin. So I put it back in today. This is how:

At Chris Watkins's urging, I have dug around and found ways to add more MediaWiki-style formatting capabilities to the Appropedia forums. Find out more at the new help page
.
Still missing: the "nowiki" directive, to turn off formatting. It's trickier than it sounds!

This is my first blog entry on Appropedia. Eventually I will make more personal blog entries, but it seems like this will be a good place to chronicle some of the mediawiki fun we get to have.

Hi out there in Appropedia Land!
This is the first Appropedia blog post I've written since the site has gone semi-live. I wrote and deleted several test blogs where I was messing around with formatting extensions. But now it's time to actually talk to all y'all! (That's my fake Southern US accent...I travel to Houston now and then, and the waitresses talk like that there, but I think they are really just doing it because they can tell I'm from out of town.)

You can use the [[Page name]] and [[Page name|link text]] formatting for wikilinks now.
(The custom filters which translate that syntax into links were cleverly disabled for this page.)

Green rice: This is the "body" input box when i use the tool (green plus) to upload an image. Where does this text go?
Centered image, and here's the text. The rice was delicious - made with the juice from pounded leaves from trees (they just said "trees" but I'm sure they chose carefully!)
