Issues

I think of this every time I step on a cardio machine (not to mention the "why do I work all day sitting down, so I can come and pay to move/why am I not outside" thoughts". Here are some issues:

  • Gym managers like to rearrange the equipment in a room and grid intertie does not lend itself to that type of spatial flexibility.
  • There is a lot of embedded energy in building a energy generator/intertie system. So careful calculations should be done.
  • Gym managers often like to keep their equipment current, so the equipment should come with some adaptability in body design.
  • We only produce around 200W on a bike, therefore a gym would probably need to be quite busy 24 hrs/day to pay off the additional cost. Anyone want some back-of-the-envelope calculations?

But definitely possible, here is a chain of Hong Kong gyms already doing it - http://www.voanews.com/english/archive/2007-03/2007-03-11-voa14.cfm?CFID...
